Why Tech Terrace Residents Need a Water Softener
Tech Terrace gets City of Lubbock water, which comes from the Ogallala Aquifer and from Lake Alan Henry and Lake Meredith. City of Lubbock Water Utilities reports average hardness at approximately 205 mg/L, which the U.S. Geological Survey rates as very hard. Hardness minerals form scale inside water heaters and pipes, and older pipes already have rougher surfaces and tighter passages where scale gathers.
Listing records show many Tech Terrace homes date from the late 1930s through the 1940s, with others added in later decades. Texas Tech opened in 1923, and the neighborhood grew beside it. Homes of that age may have galvanized steel pipe, and homes plumbed before 1986 may have lead-bearing solder on copper joints, since lead solder was banned that year. No survey maps the plumbing house by house, so a test and an inspection give the real answer for your home.

About Tech Terrace Water Quality
City of Lubbock water quality reports describe water as it leaves the treatment system, and your home’s pipes add to it before it reaches the tap. A softener removes hardness minerals. It does not remove lead, so homeowners with pre-1986 plumbing who are concerned should test their water and consider a certified filter. Our water quality testing page explains the tests available.
